History
Ripley Court aims to stimulate an interest in History and encourages pupils to see that history is all around them.
The History department organises various trips, and hosts visits from people of interest.
We encourage the skills needed to evaluate, analyse, interpret, organise, and empathise with historical information.
From Years 4-6, children are encouraged to develop an independent approach to learning and complete a project on the topics taught.
Learning is supplemented with a wide range of humanities resources and pupils are tested on their knowledge and skills gained at the at the end of each topic.
Topics
YEAR 1 TOPICS:
The Stone Age, castles, and my local area.
YEAR 2 TOPICS:
The Great Fire of London, Remembrance Day, famous men, and women, (which links to Geography), women and children in World War II, including evacuees.
YEAR 3 TOPICS
Ancient Egypt, Romans, Anglo Saxons, Vikings.
YEAR 4 TOPICS
The Middle Ages: the Norman Invasion, knights, castles, feudalism, monasteries, the reigns of notable monarchs and famous events.
Ancient Greece, a non-European society, and a thematic study.
YEAR 5 TOPICS
The Tudors: Monarchs, the Mary Rose, Voyages of Discovery, religious changes, the Armada, and social history.
The Stuarts: The Gunpowder Plot, Civil War, Fire of London, and Plague.
YEAR 6 TOPICS
Evidence: types of evidence, working as a detective to find what we can learn from sources. The Agricultural Revolution, the Industrial Revolution: new machinery, factory life, children at work, slums, disease, workhouses, poor laws. The Slave Trade, American War of Independence, the French Revolution, British Empire. Local history: a guided walk of Ripley (link to Geography)
