Geography
Geography sparks curiosity about the natural and human world. Children learn about people, places, the environment and there is special regard to the understanding of different societies and cultures, combined with global awareness. The range of skills, including fieldwork, map work and source analysis are paramount in a balanced curriculum. Experience working with maps, atlases, photographs, written and visual materials are building blocks in the encouragement of sound reasoning and analysis.
Topics
YEAR 1 TOPICS:
Mapping and direction; rainforests in comparison to the UK; The sources of bananas and chocolate.
YEAR 2 TOPICS:
Island life comparison, transport and travel, (which links to History). Hot and cold areas of the world, map, and globe work.
YEAR 3 TOPICS:
Autumn Term, the children learn how to use using an atlas to identify continents, oceans, and different countries around the globe, compass and map reading skills, and undertake a traffic survey.
Spring Term, the children learn about India and the village of Chembakoli.
Summer Term, the children learn about settlements, (which links to the History syllabus), and trade and map work.
YEAR 4 TOPICS
Autumn Term, the children learn to work with maps and how to read and understand the key features. They study the major cities and physical features of the UK.
Spring Term, they investigate natural Hazards and the causes and effects of such events on both LEDCs and MEDCs.
Summer Term, children compare and investigate a hot and a cold country; Australia and Antartica for example.
YEAR 5 TOPICS
Autumn Term - A study of one European country like (Italy) and comparison with the UK to include physical and human aspects illustrated by these examples.
Spring Term - Study all aspects of the water cycle and water treatment, (Bough Beech Reservoir), droughts and floods.
Summer Term – Children learn about ecosystems the investigation into the impact of human activity.
YEAR 6 TOPICS
Autumn Term – global locations in map work and comparing two UK regions.
Spring Term – A study of Brazil, and the country’s natural and man-made features. Fairtrade goods.
Summer Term – fieldwork study comparing maps over time and looking at grid references and topography on OS maps, which links to the History syllabus.
